AdWords
Google's pay per click model. Adwords are displayed on top of Google search results and to the right side.

Formula used to rank websites
Browsers
Software programs that enable you to view world wide web documents. They translate HTML code into text, images, sounds etc.
Cache
Identified as a space where web pages you have visited are stored in your computer. When you re-visit a document, the browser checks to see if it is cached and it will retrieve information from there because it is faster than retrieving information from the server.
Cloaking
Method of delivery that changes which page is displayed depending on the user asking for the page. This practice is unethical and is considered spamming by most search engines.
Hidden Text
Test on a website that is hidden to the human eye, but is visible to search engines, for example using the same background color for the text font. This process is unethical and is considered spam to search engines and website with hidden text will be banned from search engines.
Hyperlink
Element in an electronic document that links to another place in the same document or an entirely different document.
Internet Marketing
Term used to describe incorporating all aspects of promoting web sites online including SEO, pay per click, viral marketing, social marketing, etc.
Keywords
A word searched for in a search command. Words are searched in any order.
Meta Tags
Seen in the code of your site by a search engine. The most common and relevant are keyword and description tags. The keyword tags are used for keyword searches in search engines, & description tags provide a brief description of the webpage.
Organic Search Engine Listings
Term referred to in the SEO field as non paid or non pay per click listings in the search engines.
Page Rank
An exponential based value that signifies importance of a webpage used by google. Using the toolbar, anyone can view a sites ranking.
Search Engine Optimization
Process of modifying and marketing a website for higher rankings in search engines.
Spider
Spiders are automatically sent out by search engines to follow hyperlinks from one document to the next over the web. When a spider finds a new site, it sends information back to the main site to be indexed. Spiders also search previously spidered sites
because information is ever changing and it will update catalogued sites.
Social Marketing
Term used to describe the 'new' method of search online: example: myspace.com, youtube.com, delicio.us etc. People talking to people via the web.
Vertical Search
Targeted niche type search engine or directory focused on a particular topic or business. Typically applicable in B2B applications.
Universal Search
Google's new and improved method of incorporating blog results, news results, e-books, web pages and video's into it's search algorithm.
