10 Easy Steps To Not Get Rich QUICK.
On a daily basis I am barraged on my Twitter account, my facebook account, my fax machine, billboards, cable TV, etc. with solicitations for junk that I’m just not in the market for. My brain has now been trained to IGNORE all of it. The more we are saturated with stimulus, the more our brains have to limit the amount of information coming in….. If I need something I go out and find it. If I find you and your company to be reputable, I’ll buy. If you treat me like a human being, I’ll buy from you. If you understand my needs and what will benefit ME, I’ll buy. If you cold call me and waste my time? You and your company are dead to me.
How do you promote any product to people these days? Is it by ramming it down people’s throats on Twitter? Is it by repeating the same message over and over in your social media campaigns hoping that someone will eventually be interested in what you are pitching? Is it by printing and mailing obnoxious post cards of you doing somersaults in a Thong speedo? Annoying people with spam is not marketing. Annoying businesses with unsolicited faxes is NOT marketing. Providing people with what THEY are looking for at the right time and feeding clients and prospects with the meat that they are seeking is marketing.
When it comes to Internet marketing, there is a TON of sleaze out there. Get rich quick gurus, MLM types who think Twitter will generate a bazillion new leads, real estate agents who think listing their properties over and over on their social media pages will sell a home, etc. Internet marketing should not be all about gurus and getting rich quick. There are tremendous opportunities to be had online business-wise, but it all comes down to this: how do you promote yourself? How do you fix MY problem, how do you treat me like a human being virtually? If getting rich quick was as easy as everyone claims, there wouldn’t be a recession.
Here are my 10 easy Steps to NOT get Rich QUICK:
1.) Know your story. Who are you? Who are you as a company? Write it out, live it, believe it, Don’t go changing.
2.) Who is your market and what are they hungry for? Don’t skip this part….. Selling snow to eskimos never seemed to work.
3.) Design and build a web site that is geared solely for and about your audience, NOT you, your company, your pet hedgehog or your shiny new factory. People don’t care about you or your hedgehog. They care about themselves.
4.) Feed people, feed search engines, get found. Keep contributing to your web site, build a blog, use it, write articles for your industry, share your thoughts with your competition.
5.) Be Social with your social media. Social media = conversation. Social media is NOT a one way street. Use it right, talk to people, engage your customers, engage your prospects, work at it.
6.) Don’t stop. As much as all of these Internet marketing gurus tell you that you can be rich overnight, it’s simply not the case. Like anything, if you want success, earn it. Work at it, don’t stop blogging, don’t stop talking to people, don’t stop being an expert.
7.) BE the expert. Practice what you preach. Keep learning, stay crisp, keep teaching your prospects, they trust you, don’t lose the trust.
8.) Keep the passion. You obviously got into to business because you had a passion. Don’t lose the passion. Passion = success.
9.) Don’t BS people. People are smart. Well, most people are smart….. Be you, be real, let your personality shine through your blog: humans buy from humans.
10.) Don’t Listen To Everything You Hear or Read online. The Internet has enabled every Tom, Dick , Harry & Sally to get online and be a guru. The more gurus, the more garbage. Just because someone has read a book about Internet marketing once, or attended a conference DOES NOT CERTIFY THEM as an expert. Trust people who have wisdom, who have experience, who can PROVE their success on a constant basis. Trust people who listen to YOU.
If you have managed to get rich overnight, fantastic, kudos, congrats, etc. I’ll look forward to your infomercial and candid shots of you on your yacht, in your Ferrari and by your mansion swimming pool. Please disregard this blog and carry on. As for the rest of us, time to get back to work.
