Is Your Web Site Bloated? – 28. August, 2010

Does your web site take forever to load?  If so, you need to know this: Google is now counting page load time as a factor in their page rank algorithm, so, it’s time to take a look at some of your graphics, bulky code, excessive java script, flock of seagulls music playing the background, etc. and reduce.

“Speeding up websites is important — not just to site owners, but to all Internet users. Faster sites create happy users and we’ve seen in our internal studies that when a site responds slowly, visitors spend less time there. But faster sites don’t just improve user experience; recent data shows that improving site speed also reduces operating costs. Like us, our users place a lot of value in speed — that’s why we’ve decided to take site speed into account in our search rankings. ” Google Webmaster Blog.

When you start thinking like Google and more importantly your web site users and their VERY LOW patience threshold, your web site starts to speak directly to them.  Today’s web sites are clean, simple and minimalist and have no bad 80′s music playing in the background.

I don’t have that kind of time…. – 18. August, 2010

I was surfing some local Orlando restaurant web sites today and found a huge common theme that annoyed me to no end… PLEASE WAIT WHILE LOADING. 3 out of the 4 restaurant web sites that I visited made me wait for a menu to load, or wait for a tacky Flash presentation to load, etc.  I will be the first to admit that I don’t have a lot of patience, but I literally waited for about 2 minutes for one menu to load when I clicked it.  The end result, I hit the back button and went on to the next web site.

When you design your web site, please keep this in mind: people have NO attention span online.  They want fast, efficient and effective, they will not hang around and wait for 14 minutes while something loads no matter how amazingly pretty the web site is. Your web site can still be beautiful and visually stunning without loading intricate and lengthy files.

This Web Site Best Viewed In …. – 1. August, 2010

This Web Site Is Best Viewed In…. Fill in the browser blank here.  Web designers should be designing web sites for ALL browsers including Firefox, IE (God Forbid), Safari, etc.  We recently worked on a project for a client who had a custom database that was running on the site… Each time we viewed the database portion of the web site in Firefox, it declined to show the images (which are mission critical to the software).  The developer’s work around was this: Display an error message: This web site best viewed in Internet Explorer 5.0.

Now, it is possible that web sites will look differently in some browsers, usually spacing issues, etc., BUT, your web designer needs to make certain that your web site FUNCTIONS in each and every browser on the web and not just display an error message because they could not figure out why it’s not functioning.

The Web Site Tuneup. – 31. July, 2010

I was at my local car dealer yesterday with my truck getting the 23rd recall addressed and kept hearing about a mutli point inspection for my truck. While I’m sure it’s just another excuse for them to jack up my bill, I kept thinking about how important it is that we all take some and give our web site a quick multi point inspection: Here are some areas that you should be taking a look at on your web site at least once a month:

1.) Web Site Stats.  PLEASE spend some time and review your web site stats.  You can find all kinds of info in here especially any broken pages, hacking attempts, etc.

2.) Software Updates.  If you are running WordPress or any other type of blogging software, it’s critical to keep your software up to date as many updates include security patches, etc.

3.) Email.  If you tend to keep all of your messages on the server (not pulling them down into your Outlook or Mac Mail) go in and clean house once a month.  If your email accounts get full, you will no longer be able to send and receive email.

4.) Content. Time to take the Thanksgiving Pilgrim decorations off of your home page.  Keeping your web site relevant and up to date is critical for your clients and prospects.  Blow the cob webs off and keep it up to date.

5.) Copyright year.  One of my pet peeves, if you have a copyright message in the footer of your web site, please make sure it is displaying this year, not 1996.

6.) Site layout and Graphics.  Web design is constantly evolving, trends change, etc.  Be sure that your web site doesn’t have that 1990′s framed in look still.

7.) Domain name.  One of the biggest things I see clients forget about is their domain name and keeping it current.  Check in and see when your domain will expire, make sure you don’t miss that expiration date, it can cause all kinds of issues.

8.)  Backup. When was the last time that your web host backed up your web site? If you don’t know, you should make it your business to find out.  Things happen with servers, sometimes, terrible things.  Request a zipped backup from your web site once a month and you’ll sleep better at night.

9.) Bandwidth. The more traffic that a web site gets, the more bandwidth it consumes.  Some servers will automatically suspend an account if it exceeds it’s bandwidth limit, it’s a good idea to know how much bandwidth you are getting per month and how much you are using. Your host can provide you with this information.

10.) SEO Stuff. Are your keywords still relevant on your web site? Have you updated your XML Sitemap with the latest content you’ve created? What are your top ten keywords and how can you improve / maintain those top keywords in the search engines?

By taking time to address these key areas you ensure that your web site is running in tip top condition.

Turning Passion Into Online Performance. – 20. July, 2010

Do you love what you do? Are you passionate about it? People sense passion, passion is contagious, passion can set your company apart from the competition. The same can be said about your web site.  Does your web site capture your passion? Does it evoke that critical emotion in your prospect and connect with them? Your web site is just one more way to share your passion and enthusiasm about your product and / or services with your prospects.  If it’s not grabbing them and engaging them, it’s little more than an online business card.

Here’s a few ways you can share your passion through your web site / Internet Marketing initiatives:

* Blog about how your product / service has changed lives or dramatically improved other people’s lives.
* Share a story about how your company impacted the local community.
* Tweet useful product tips to your followers
* Suggest new and improved uses for your products and services
* Write copy that captures people emotionally or find a professional copywriter to help.
* Share photos of PEOPLE on your web site, people enjoying or benefiting from your product or service
* Share a story about how you got into the industry, what you love most about.
* Share client testimonials on your web site
* Encourage clients to post comments / reviews about your products and how you can improve upon them.

These are just some ideas off the top of my head, but the point is this: It’s time to turn your passion into online performance. People are searching for your products and services online, BE there to share your passion and enthusiasm with them.

Mixed Messages & Your Web Site. – 19. July, 2010

I have a few job openings for our company, so I’ve been receiving a ton of resumes.  Some good, some NOT so good and then the one I received today, indescribable. The particular job opportunity was for a Social Media / Internet Marketing assistant, so of course, I’m looking for someone who has a strong background in social media and Internet marketing.  I open the email only to find a list of web sites that this individual has designed. I also noticed that this particular person sent the same email / resume to about 50,000 other folks in the CC line of the email.  I’m instantly NOT impressed.  Something kept me on the email though, rather than hitting delete, my curiosity got the best of me and I had to click some of the web site samples. My friends, the web site I saw today sent shivers down my spine.  Mind you, I look at about a billion sites a day, so it truly takes a lot to make it on my radar.  This particular web site landed smack dab on my web sites that suck radar as soon as the bubbles on the web site started making bubbly noises. It got worse.  Next to the bubbling bubbles trickling up the page there was a message about being professional.  The message indicated that this particular person (company) was a true professional. But wait, there’s more….. At the bottom of the page, big words: FREE WEB SITE TEMPLATES by StarFish or MoonFish, or something similar.

There was absolutely nothing professional about this email, job resume, the web sites that were sent as samples, etc. Bubbles and sound effects will always FAIL the professional web site design test . If you are telling the world that you are a professional anything, please make certain that your web site emulates that claim, and for the love of God, please, NO bubbles.

Web Design & The Importance Of GOOD Photography. – 15. July, 2010

My wife and I went to a so called Hawaiian restaurant a while back.  It was supposed to be the latest and greatest in Hawaiian food and I was hungry.  As you wait in line to order, there are photos on the back of the wall. Photos of the food. Photos of food that should not be photographed by an amateur armed with a polaroid.  The photos made the food literally look disgusting. One I remember well was a hot dog smothered with chili.  It just did NOT look appetizing. This my friends was the last time we ever visited the restaurant, in fact, it’s long closed.

Good photography is essential to a good web site.  If you are featuring your artwork on your web site, or your products, you need a professional to take the photos.  We have gotten more than our share of terrible photographs taken by the same person who photographed that Hawaiian food and have been told, “Work Your Magic”.  Here is a news flash, Photoshop can only do so much.  Much like the restaurant example, bad photographs can leave bad impressions and turn people off to your products. If it’s within your budget, spend the extra money to get a pro.

Web Design & Keeping It Simple Stupid. – 12. July, 2010

When we meet with prospects about their web design, they are all drawn to the shiny flashy web sites because they saw that their competition is doing it. My question is: is it working out for the competition? Is that complex array of flash navigation that only works in one browser really going to help you get more sales? Maybe that catchy song playing in the background that you can’t find the pause button on is generating leads like wild fire. Or is it perhaps the twenty minute flash presentation that evolves into a 30 minute video highlighting the CEO telling you how honored he is that you are visiting his web site?

People don’t have a lot of time these days.  When they find your web site, they want to easily navigate it, NOT have to click the pause button on the Guns & Roses song you thought would be catchy, not have to click their heels three times to figure out how to get to the next page, and do NOT want to watch your CEO discuss his favorite episode of The Office.

Keep your web site simple, keep the design clean, build it for the busy people, the people who want to get business done NOW, NOT the marketing intern who thinks that pastel colors, flashy sparkles and jamming music are just the coolest darned things out there now.

Staying Important Online. – 22. June, 2010

Is your web site important? Is it relevant? Is it up to date? Does your copyright still say 2007 in the footer? Are you feeding your prospects and showing them just how important your company really is?

The key to successfully promoting a web site (and business) is by staying important.  Stay important to your clients, stay important to your prospects, stay important to search engines.  Here are a few ideas on how your web site can “STAY important.”

* Pull a social media feed into your home page.  Be sure obviously to actually use your social media accounts.
* Create a corporate news room page. UPDATE it.
*  Add NEW photos of your events, staff, etc.
* Update that copyright in the bottom of your page, people notice it.
* Stay engaged with current events and your industry, blog about it OFTEN.
* FRESHEN up your web site with a relevant look
* Start an ezine and allow people to opt in on your home page. Provide people with useful tips and tools.

Is Your Web Site Indispensable? – 17. June, 2010

Can your business live without your web site?

Now more than ever, marketing is mission critical.  Before you sign that big bad yellow pages contract, take a look at your web site. Is it selling? Is it providing leads? Is it educating your clients and prospects? If it’s not, you may be doing it wrong.  If it’s not, you should be dealing with another web design / marketing firm and NOT dealing with the yellow pages period.

Web sites are no longer a necessary evil, they are an intricate critical component of any business marketing plan. They should be alive and always growing. They should always be evolving to meet people and customers where they are at.
