In SEO, there is nothing more important than focus. Many folks want their web site to rank well in the search engines on a variety of terms, which can be done, however, when those products are all over the place, Google may look at your web site as just that, all over the place.

It’s important to know that Google wants to deliver the most relevant and targeted results to the searcher, if your web site is all over the place and not focused on particular keywords / keyphrases, it’s much more of a challenge to serve your web site up in the search engine results. I’ve put together 5 steps you should consider when building your web site in terms of SEO:

1.) Know and understand what people are searching for.
Use a tool such as Google’s free adword tool:to discover the most popular keywords and keyphrases that are relevant to your business.  Knowing what people search for is 99% of the battle. I can’t stress how important this step is, it will become the foundation to your entire SEO campaign.

2.) Consider the keywords you found above when building your web site structure.
Incorporating some of these keywords into the web site directory structure is a great way to reinforce to Google what keywords you are relevant to.

3.) Copy considerations.
It’s mission critical to incorporate keywords and key-phrases that you discovered in step 1 into your web copy.  I encourage companies to write their copy first, and THEN go back and sprinkle in some relevant keywords where it’s appropriate and where the copy still reads like copy written for human beings. It’s important NOT to over do it here. Dumping in a ton of keywords not only looks obvious to the reader, but Google does not appreciate keyword stuffing.

4.) Meta titles and meta descriptions.
It’s important to meta tag each page of your web site uniquely.  Incorporate the keywords you learned about in Step 1 on the pertinent page in your title and description meta tags.  The keywords used in this step should reflect the content / copy on that particular page.

5.) Reinforcement.
Ok, once you’ve completed step 1-4, it’s time to get Google excited about your web site.  You’ll need to start generating pertinent, unique and relevant content and adding it to your web site.  Using the keywords and keyphrases you discovered in step 1, craft your insights and perspectives on your industry, do it often, do it with passion.  Using a tool like a wordpress blog, you can easily continue adding content and attracting people and search engines to your web site.  This step is critical, and this step is what will differentiate you from your competition.  Google loves content and if you feed it enough good stuff, it will reward your web site with rankings.

As you can see, step 1 is critical and pours the foundation for SEO success.
