How To Be A Better Marketer.
Sales are flat and your business needs leads. Your web site needs some attention because it still proudly displays your Business Journal article that came out in 2003, your social media is flat and boring and the last twitter post was referencing the undercooked hamburgers at the company picnic, your corporate blogging and online PR campaign is almost non existent. You are running around like a mad man / woman trying to put it all together and run a business. The truth is, you don’t have time for all of this: You’re sitting in meetings, reading reports, suggesting new markets, dealing with employees and analyzing financial information. So how can you even think about promoting / marketing your company? Sound familiar?
Over the last few years of running my own business, I’ve come to realize that I can’t do it all. I don’t always have the time to speak to every employee every day, I don’t always have the time to go shopping for the company office supplies, I don’t have time to meet with our accountant, or our PR firm, etc.. And quite honestly, I’m not the best person to be doing most of that stuff. I know in my gut that marketing my company is my sweet spot. Who knows it better than me? Who is more passionate about Internet marketing or SEO than me? How and why did I get into this crazy business in the first place?
The way to be a better marketer, business owner, sales executive, chief bottle washer is to focus and get rid of unnecessary noise. Take some time out of the business and realize all of the extra noise that is being generated that doesn’t need to be there. Did you personally need to go get the office supplies? Are you the right one to be reporting to the accounting company? Are you the right one to even be worrying about your web site and how much traffic it got last month? What do you love to do? Do you love marketing the company? Do you love the numbers or operations? Define what you love and embrace it.
Taking steps back, taking stock of who you are and who you aren’t will yield volumes, especially if you do something about it and surround yourself with the right people for the right job.
