I’m up here in the windy city of Chicago enjoying the Thanksgiving holidays with my brother and his family. My brother and I made a pilgrimage to Bass Pro Shops to seek out turkey injection marinade stuff (must be a mid west thing…) and he started to tell me about hit recent term paper for school. He is a bit of a smart ass and is taking a business communication course for his career: he wrote his paper about nursing homes and all of the abuse that occurs there, etc. He cited many relevant sources and had factual data to support his claim that seniors are often abused at the homes. It turns out that his professor is a GM of a nursing home chain. She was not amused. She had her own opinions, she had her own biases, she did not appreciate his sarcasm, etc. He failed to know his market, he also failed to get a decent grade on that paper.
When it comes to Internet marketing and your web site, the key to successful design, the key to successful marketing is to know who you are marketing your web site to. After you have made that discovery and after you have isolated where you can find your market online, you can start designing and then, start promoting your site. It sounds so simple and elementary, but if you are designing your web site for you and NOT your audience, or if your web designer is insisting on designing your web site a certain way because everyone else is doing it this way these days, your site may not be reaching the very people you are targeting. Here are some basic considerations to isolate your demographic BEFORE you begin designing your web site:
1.) Age Group. You wouldn’t promote your mortgage business to 18-21 year olds would you? Don’t place a myspace badge on your mortgage business web site.
2.) Gender. Is your product or service geared toward a certain gender? Would you design your web site and logo using all dark blues if your web site was selling cosmetics to women?
3.) Socio Economic. Do you cater to a higher end market? If you sell high end mutli million dollar real estate are you going to advertise a free $50 gift card to walmart for simply filling out a contact form?
It’s so important to know and isolate these factors before you set out on the Internet. Frankly, most of the businesses that come to us are coming to us because their web site was not designed for their demographic and they have not been attracting the correct market.
