I’ve dealt with so many unsuspecting folks who have had their domain name held hostage by a third party.  This can be a very difficult situation, especially if you are trying to relocate your web site, change hosting, upgrade etc., as you NEED access to where that domain was registered. Their is a process you can initiate to seize control of your domain name, but most of the time, it does require cooperation from the third party that may have registered it.

Here are a few quick tips to help protect your domain name:

1.) Be certain to purchase your domain in your name or your company name.

2.) It’s not a good idea to have an employee purchase it: if you ever need to let that employee go, they can potentially wreak havoc on your web site.

3.) Do not lose your user name and password to your domain registrar.  Resetting that password can be a lengthy and annoying process.

4.) Be sure to keep the original email address that you used when you registered the domain. You will often get renewal reminders sent there from the registrar.

5.) Make a note of when your domain will expire and set a reminder to renew the domain name at least a month before the expiration date.

Your domain name can be one of your most valuable assets, be sure to protect it.
