I’m often asked by clients / prospects about having and using multiple domain names for their sites and just ‘mirroring’ the master site on the excess domains.  The thought is, the more the merrier, BUT, the caution is this: You should not take the same web site and duplicate it sixteen times on sixteen different domain names.  The danger / issue with this practice is that you are feeding Google duplicate content.  Google doesn’t like duplicate content, in fact, it can penalize your domain(s) if it consistently finds the exact same info on multiple domains.

One sound strategy would be to strategically use multiple domains to address different channels/ verticals in your marketplace.  You could have an informative blog on one domain, a resource center on another, address a completely different demographic on the other, etc.. While it may be a lot of extra work, it can pay off big time over time.
