I’m constantly asked about ‘links’ when it comes to SEO. “How many inbound links do I get?” “Can I get thousands of Inbound Links?” or one of my personal favorites, “How many search engines are you going to submit my web site to?”  Here’s the raw truth about ‘links’ and SEO…. Inbound links DO help assist with SEO, BUT, here’s the catch, those inbound links need to make sense!  Submitting your web site to over 10,000 search engines / directories / link farms, etc. is a recipe for disaster and could result in Google removing you from the search results.

Consider Google’s Web Master Guidelines about what NOT to do:

  • Links intended to manipulate PageRank
  • Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web
  • Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging (“Link to me and I’ll link to you.”)
  • Buying or selling links that pass PageRank

Here’s What DOES work: seek quality links from industry trades, or bloggers who are RELEVANT to your industry or area of expertise. The key here is quality and relevance.  Understand that Google’s main product is relevancy…. The more you think like Google in terms of quality results, the better off your web site will be in the long run.
