Ugly Inbound Links.
“Avoid links to web spammers or ‘bad neighborhoods’ on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.”
Google Webmaster Hints.
Oftentimes I’ll have prospects drill me about how many inbound links that we are going to get for them to their web site. It is indeed a fact that inbound links pointing to your web site can enhance your organic search engine rankings. BUT, what most people don’t realize is that the inbound links need to make sense and NOT be coming from ‘bad neighborhoods’. This is a guilt by association issue, if Google keeps finding ugly inbound links pointing to your web site, then your web site must be of poor quality as well: the lesser the quality, the lesser the interest Google has in your web site, you could potentially even get your site banned from Google entirely. Bad neighborhood links could consist of any of the following issues:
* Sites that use cloaking or try and trick the search engines.
* Sites that are violating copyright laws (stealing content, etc.)
* Sites with hidden copy and / or text links.
* Sites that install viruses or malware on site visitor computers
* Sites that are known link farms (a link farm is just a gigantic compilation of web site links that serves no genuine purpose to users.)
Many of the so called ‘link building’ companies simply push a button and your web site is submitted wily nilly to a ton of potential rough neighborhoods. Link building should be done with purpose and reason, your web site should be submitted to sites that are relevant to your industry and of high quality. The higher the quality of links pointing to your web site, the more value Google will place on yours, which subsequently can only help you with your search engine rankings.
