Web Design Templates : Has it ever paid to be cheap?

Had  a nice chat with an Orlando based attorney yesterday, he specializes in one particular area of practice and had purchased a web site package from a  large ‘legal industry’ web related firm.  After one year of the site being live, it has produced minimal leads and has not achieved search engine rankings worth discussing.  Upon looking at the site, one can tell it was a simple web template, while the template is well constructed and does have individual meta tags for each page, etc., it is not scalable or even largely editable.  When the attorney purchased the template, he was of course sold on marketing and how these folks really knew his industry: The problem is, there has been no content added or edited since the site went live and there is no way of adding content to the site with the current setup.

With that being said: while the web design pre-fabbed template may sound like an economically sound decision for an attorney, cheaper is seldom ever better.  Here’s my advice: if you are a realtor, attorney, doctor, etc., it does not pay to cheap with your online presence.  You are telling the world that this web template represents YOU and your business.  Templates will include many of the same images, same style, same navigation etc., which will not set you apart from the rest of your direct competition.  A web site is your opportunity to be who you want to be, to portray and instill confidence in your target market and to convert them to a sale or lead.  Here’s the bottom line: DO IT RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING : consider a scalable custom web design with search engine marketing built into it: set your company, law firm, real estate office, mortgage company etc. up for success from the beginning.
