Not all web site traffic is good traffic.  I was reviewing a clients web site analytics today and noticed that their traffic had been trending downward since we took over the account.  This is not what I like to see, in fact, I freaked out for a while.  Luckily, I’m inquisitive and love numbers, etc., (geek) so I dug deeper, and deeper, and deeper.

Here’s what I found.  While the traffic was going down by about 1 to 2 percent a month, the targeted keywords that we were after were trending upward.  So, the blog articles we had written, the optimization that we had performed was actually working and improving.  The root of the issue was this: the previous SEO Company (we’ll call them Lucifer, Inc.) had set up all kinds of goofy doorways, feeders, etc. that were now GONE. So, while they were generating a few clicks to the site, they were completely un-targeted leads, BUT, it inflated the analytics numbers every month until it was taken away.

If you aren’t watching your Google Analytics, you seriously need to start now.  Numbers truly set you free, so digging deeper can reveal so much, not just about your web traffic, but about your company, your market & your prospects.
