While we are in business to create customers for life, things can always happen: Each web design we create for someone, whether it includes a custom database, an online store or some special coding is built for portability and scalability. One of our search engine marketing clients called the other day because he was looking to have us host his e-commerce store. Unfortunately, our hosting is linux based so we referred him to a close partner microsoft based hosting firm in Orlando. Long story short, they couldn’t help him either. His site was created utilizing a special software (that hardly anyone uses) and required an expensive license in order to actually run his site. What a nightmare. Now, it seems as though this gentleman is trapped. He has two choices: find a host that utilizes this hard to find platform, or convert everything over to something portable.
The obvious choice would be to convert everything, however, it costs more money and time. Some quick advice, before you hire a web design firm to design your new website, find out what platform they utilize, what programming language they use and what e-commerce store platform they are using. You may also wish to ask what software program they are using to actually create your site, i.e., Adobe / Macromedia Dreamweaver, FrontPage (God forbid), etc. A little bit of due diligence in the beginning can save you plenty of time, aggravation and money down the road.
