The Future of Content Marketing: Visual Storytelling

Dictionary.com defines content as “something that is to be expressed through some medium, as speech, writing, or any of various arts.” While we all may be guilty of pigeonholing content as being only text, in the ever-evolving world of digital marketing, there is an entirely different spectrum of content marketing you may not be using: visual storytelling.

Since mobile devices now top PCs in accessing the web (show of hands who’s NOT reading this on a desktop please), marketers are now able to target audiences for longer periods of time, throughout any time of day. What’s a marketer to do to make a message stand out from the soporific cretins of the marketing world? The answer to that question is conceptualizing through visualization and luckily for us, there are a ton of different ways to make that happen. Below are some tips to help you get started:

Incorporate Video: According to TheVerge.com, 8 of the top 10 most shared posts on Facebook incorporate video. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so just imagine what a 30 second video can say. Show your audience why they need to be inspired and excited by what you have to say. This video received 13.8 million hits, putting it in the Top 10 Watched Videos of 2014:

User-Generated Content is Golden: In April 2014, Starbucks had a contest asking patrons to draw on their Starbucks cups, take a photo, and then enter the contest with #WhiteCupContest on social media. 4,300 entries later, Starbucks had created a nice buzz that played out on social media, all while connecting personally to their audience. Sidenote: Starbucks’ marketing strategies are pretty killer. Why do you think those Starbucks Baristas just can’t seem to spell names correctly? Go to Instagram and search for #Starbucksfail. Another nice little marketing tool ‘eh?

Create Images, Graphics, Infographics & Video with Purpose: The visual aids that you use in your marketing efforts should tell your audience exactly who you are, but you also want to spark their curiosity so that a deeper understanding of your message is sought out. Be sure that whatever visuals you create and use are shareable so that your message is then taken even further into cyberville. Grammarly creates some great graphics that instantly tell you what they are about, contain humor, and have the ability to be shared throughout different social media platforms:

That’s it for now friends! Now you have some ideas on how to visually stimulate your audience; get to creating some amazing things that really boom, pow, and bang!
